Important Items to keep in Sargi Thali for Karwa Chauth
Karwa Chauth is celebrated in the month of Karthik after the Navratri. The festival is celebrated to mark the love and affection shared between couples. On this, women observe fast from sunrise to moonrise without consuming anything. The fast is kept to ensure the long life and well-being of the partner. Women dress up in beautiful vibrant colour attires with solah Srinagar. After this, they perform puja following all traditions and rituals and break their fast after the moonrise.
The women cannot eat or drink anything the entire day, so a ritual is followed: receiving sargi from the mother-in-law in the morning right before starting the fast.
What is a sargi?
Along with celebrating the bond with the husband, this festival is also celebrated to strengthen the bond between the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. Sargi is a symbol of blessing and love from the mother-in-law to her son’s wife. Karwa Chauth Sargi is a pre-dawn meal which is consumed before starting the fast. The sargi thali has a lot of things which are required to complete the fast as a part of the ritual.
Sargi is the food eaten by the woman who fasts through the day after taking a bath in the early hours of the morning. The Mother-in-law prepares sargi food. The sargi includes sweet and savoury dishes. The sargi thali is comprised of Pheni or Meethi Seviyan, fruits, coconut, Meethi Mathri, dry fruits, Mathri, paratha, sweets, and tea/juice.
Sargi thali has many auspicious and energy-boosting dishes that the mother-in-law prepares for her daughter-in-law to sustain throughout the day with her blessing and love. Along with the edible item, other Suhaag items like sindoor, saree etc., are also included as a sign of love and care. Basically, a sargi thali is a symbol of love between saas and bahu relationship.
