करवा चौथ का त्यौहार बोहोत धूम धाम से मनाया जाता है। इस त्यौहार पे सुहागिन महिलाएं अपने सुहाग की रक्षा के लिए व्रत रखती हैं। व्रत के दौरान Karva chauth vrat katha भी सुनी जाती है जिससे आस पड़ोस की सभी महिलाएं साथ में बैठकर और अच्छे से श्रृंगार करके सुनती हैं।

एक सर्वगुण और धर्म के कर्मो में निमित रहने वाला ब्राह्मण था। उस ब्राह्मण की एक पुत्री और सात पुत्र थे। पुत्री का नाम वीरावती था और इकलौती बेहेन होने के कारन उसके सातों भाई उससे बोहोत प्रेम करते थे। कुछ समय में वीरावती का विवाह एक ब्राह्मण युवक से हो गया। विवाह के कुछ समंय बाद वीरावती अपने मायके आई। उस दिन उसने करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा था और भूक के कारण वो बोहोत व्याकुल हो रही थी। शाम को सरे भाई अपने अपने काम से घर आये तो उन्होंने अपने बेहेन से उसकी व्याकुलता का कारण पूछा। वीरावती ने बताया की उसका व्रत है और वह चन्द्रमा को अर्घ्य देने के पश्चात ही भोजन ग्रहण कर सकती है। परन्तु भइओ से अपनी लाड़ली बेहेन की व्याकुलता देखि नहीं जा रही थी। तब सबसे छोटे भाई ने एक तरकीब लगाई और एक दीपक प्रज्वयालीत करके चलनी की ओट में पास के पीपल के वृक्ष पर रख दिया। दूर से देखने पर ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा था मनो चाँद निकल आया हो। इसके पश्चात सभी भइओ ने जाके वीरावती को कहा की चाँद निकल आया है और अब तुम अपना करवा चौथ का व्रत खोल सकती हो। वीरावती ने भइओ की बात मनके विधिपूर्वक चन्द्रमा की अर्घ्य दिआ।

घर एके उसने जैसे ही भोजन का पहला निवाला अपने मुख में डाला तो उसे चींख आ गई। परन्तु वीरावती इस चेतावनी का समझ न पाई। जब दूसरा निवाला मुख में रखा तो उसमे बाल निकल आया परन्तु वीरावती भूख से इतनी व्याकुल थी की उसने इसे भी अनदेखा करदिआ। जैसे ही तीसरा निवाला उसने ग्रहण किआ उसे उसके पति की मृत्यु का सामंचार प्राप्त हुआ। यह दुखद समाचार सुनके वीरावती रोने बिलखने लगी तब उसकी भाभी ने उसे सच्चाई से अवगत कराया और बताया की ये सब व्रत टूटने के कारन हुआ है।

सच्चाई जानने के उपरांत वीरावती ने निश्चय किआ की वो अपने पति को अपने सतीत्व से दुबारा जीवित करेगी और इसीलिए उसने अपने पति का अंतिम संस्कार नहीं होने दिआ। वो पूरे एक साल तक अपनी पति के शरीर की देखभाल करती रही और उसपर उगने वाली सुईनुमा घास को इक्कठा करती रही। उसके मन में दृढ़ निश्चय था की उसका पति वापस से जीवित होगा। एक साल बाद फर से करवा चौथ का त्यौहार आया और वीरावती की भाभीआं उससे आषीर्वाद लेने आई। उसने अपनी भाभिओं से आग्रह की ये 'यम सूई ले लो, पिय सूई दे दो, मुझे भी अपनी जैसी सुहागिन बना दो। तब उसकी एक भाभी ने कहा की सबसे छोटे भाई के कारण तेरे पति की मृत्यु हुई है इसीलिए उसकी पत्नी ही इसे जीवित कर सकती है।

अंत में सबसे छोटी भाभी आती ह और वीरावती उससे घास लेके उसके पति को जीवित करने का आग्रह करती है। कुछ देर तक भाभी हठ करती है परन्तु वीरावती का पतिव्रता रूप और सतीत्व देख कर उसकी बात मान लेती है। इसके पश्चात भाभी अपनी छोटी अंगुली को चीरकर उसमें से अमृत उसके पति के मुंह में डाल देती है। वीरावती का पति जीवित हो जाता है।

There was a Brahmin who was involved in the deeds of all virtues and religion. The Brahmin had a daughter and seven sons. The daughter's name was Veeravati, and being the only child, her seven brothers loved her very much. After some time Veeravati got married to a Brahmin young man. After some time of marriage, Veeravati came to her maternal home. On that day, she had kept a fast of Karva Chauth, and she was getting very upset due to hunger. When all the brothers came home from their work in the evening, they asked their sister the reason for her anxiety. Veeravati said that she is fasting and she can take food only after offering Arghya to the moon.

But the anxiety of their beloved sister was not visible from the brothers. Then the youngest brother came up with a trick and lit a lamp, and placed it on a nearby peepal tree under a sieve. Looking from afar, it seemed as if the moon had come out. After this, all the brothers went and told Veeravati that the moon has come out and now you can open your Karva Chauth Vrat. Veeravati offered prayers to the moon in a methodical manner with the words of her brothers. As soon as she put the first morsel of food in her mouth at home, she sneezed. But Veeravati could not understand this warning. When the second morsel was placed in the mouth, hair came out in it, but Veeravati was so distraught with the hunger that she ignored it too. As soon as she ate the third bite, she received the news of her husband's death. Hearing this sad news, Veeravati started crying when her sister-in-law informed her about the truth and said that all this happened due to the breaking of Karva Chauth fast.

After knowing the truth, Veeravati decided that she would revive her husband with her chastity, and that is why she did not allow her husband to be cremated. She took care of her husband's body for a whole year and kept collecting the needle-like grass growing on it. She was determined in her mind that her husband would be alive again. A year later, the festival of Karva Chauth arrived, and Veeravati's sister-in-law came to seek her blessings. She urged her sisters-in-law, 'यम सूई ले लो, पिय सूई दे दो, मुझे भी अपनी जैसी सुहागिन बना दो. Then one of her sisters-in-law said that her husband has died because of the youngest brother, so only his wife can make him alive. At last, the youngest sister-in-law arrives, and Veeravati urges her to take the grass and revive her husband. For some time, the sister-in-law insists, but seeing Veeravati's virtuous form and chastity, she agrees to her. After this, the sister-in-law cuts off her little finger and pours the nectar out of it into her husband's mouth. Veeravati's husband becomes alive.
